Rebuilding Paco, Manila

Two years ago while I was abroad working in China for Google, I asked many of my friends to celebrate my birthday with me and “buy me a drink.” Some of you may remember this, and some of you may be hearing about this for the first time…

Essentially, I asked my friends to donate only what a drink costs to raise funds for a community feeding, art supplies, and medical supplies for the impoverished neighborhood where my dad had grown up in and I had spent many childhood summers.

This neighborhood is called Paco.

About two days ago, a fire broke out and engulfed our old, beloved Paco. The fire happened mid-day when most households are left only with the women, elderly, and small children.  They were helpless and unable to save anything except their lives. Everything was lost: clothes, medicines, food, and their homes. Later in the day, husbands, sons, daughters, and school-age children came home to find ashes and rubble.

Families are now cramped in makeshift tents in open streets. There are approximately 700 victims of the fire. This is our beloved Paco.

In a place where families already had very little, they are now left with nothing but the clothes on their back.

So from today, June 25th, to my upcoming birthday, August 2nd, I again ask all of you to “buy me a drink,” or if you’re up for it, “treat me to a birthday dinner” by donating only what a drink or nice dinner would cost to help me rebuild Paco. Your generous donation will be used to help my beloved second home a chance to heal.

I will match all individual contributions up to $200 USD until my contribution is $10,000 USD.

You can send me money through Venmo, Google Wallet, Chase QuickPay, or Paypal – all information you need is below.

From the bottom of my heart,

Please treat me to a birthday drink or dinner by Aug 2*:
*I opted for direct contributions rather than using sites like to avoid their processing fees. If you’d like to contribute in another way that’s not listed above, please email me and let me know.
